PRC Runners at the Old Deer Park 10k

PRC Captain Liz and two associate members stepped out at the Old Deer Park 10k in freezing fog at 9.15am on 20th November.

Despite the cold conditions and poor visibility the race was a great success and there were Personal Bests all round.

PRC runs against riots!

Parliamentary Running Club hit the streets of Clapham on 23rd August, running 5k to raise money for community cleanup projects following the riots that hit the area earlier in the month.

The event, which was organised in conjunction with local Police Community Support Officers, was attended by 169 runners from all over London, and covered by the Evening Standard.

PRC was represented by Nick, Martin, Sarah and Liz (pictured below, L-R), with Nick and Martin heading off in the "faster" group and Liz and Sarah modestly opting to start in the "less fast" group.

Special congratulations go to Nick, who impressed by storming home in the top 10. Speaking afterwards, Nick said, "I think I was in the top 10, or maybe 5 or something."

The event raised over £1300 in total.

Clapham Common 10k 2011

Parliamentary Running Club Ladies Storm Clapham Common

Well done to the three Parliamentary Running Club ladies (and their guest) who turned out at Clapham Common on 5th June.

A massive congratulations to Florence and Harriet who both completed their first ever race in the 5k, coming a fantastic 49th and 51st out of 115 in 28.11 and 28.12 respectively.

Liz managed a PB in the 10k, in 56.30, and came 276th out of 407 (or 79th out of 170 women).

A good time was had by all in the run and the picnic afterwards, but the biggest reward was the hug from Giant Bee.

Parliamentary Running Club is now available on Fridays!

The Lowdown:

Wow! Tell me more: Friday lunchtime is now the home of PRC interval training (go fast, followed by slow)

Give me an example: 5 sets of 2 minutes fast followed by 2 minutes recovery jog

What's it for?: "Speedwork doesn't just make you run faster. It makes you fitter, increases the range of movements in your joints, makes you more comfortable at all speeds and ultimately will help you to run faster for longer" (Runners' World Complete Guide to Running)

When?: 12.30pm

Where?: Meet in 1 Parliament Street reception, the session will be in or around St. James's Park

How long will I be out?: A maximum of 35 minutes

Will Fridays ever be the same again?: No, they really won't.

Last night we welcomed our second Guest MP, the fabulous Jo Swinson, MP for East Dunbartonshire.

Jo is running the London Marathon on 17th April, along with Vice President Martin (and 35 000 others, of course), and she is only the second female MP ever to do so. Jo is raising funds for Lukaemia and Lymphoma Research, and we wish her all the best - and then a well-earned rest afterwards!

11 people came to the session, and 6 people joined  Jo for 5 lovely miles in the parks.

We even got a mention on twitter afterwards!

I think this means we are famous.

We look forward to welcoming Jo back to PRC soon!

March Update

It's March!

That happened pretty fast.

Some new club stats for you all:

1. MEMBERSHIP:

We now have 26 members on the books, of whom 18 have attended at least 1 session.
This includes staff from Labour, Conservative and the Lib Dems, as well as 3 House of Commons staff.

7 new members have attended since Christmas.

As we started with only 4 members last summer, this is excellent progress!

2. MILAGE:
Collectively as a club, we have run 399 miles since records began (last October that is, not the stone age).

That is almost precisely the distance between London and Edinburgh!

Good work, team.

3. THOUGHT

Running thought of the day:
Thought a long Running Club session was a big challenge?

Try the SPARTATHLON.. 153 miles long, based on Herodotus' description of the route taken by Pheidippides when he ran from Athens to Sparta seeking reinforcements for the impending Battle of Marathon.. which as we know, was the birthplace of another famous race.

The course record is 20hours 25minutes.

8th February 2011

We have now welcomed our first ever Guest MP of the Week, Chris Evans, MP for Islwyn!A great time was had by all so thanks very much for coming Chris.

In total we had 11 runners including 2 new members - this means we now have 21 members on the books, of which 15 have been to at least 1 session. As we started out as 4 people last summer that is a growth rate of over 500% - maybe we should found our own economy next?

Also the new T shirts have now been unveiled, as displayed by Chris here!
Many thanks to Martin for sorting. We will now all look officially EVEN MORE fantastic than we already do!
